The modern mosaic is born from the analysis of past applications, the theory of experimentation and the technical interpretation of the mosaicist. It does not originate by chance; each gesture comes from thorough thought translated to each tesserae and transformed into art.
This workshop is designed for serious mosaic artists with experience in mosaic art. We also welcome professional artists, muralists, architects and other design professionals who want the knowledge to incorporate mosaic into their designs.
The concept for this class comes from the Friuli School of Mosaic in Spilimbergo, Italy where Semeraro trained and taught for six years and trained and worked with of world renowned mosaicist Giulio Candusssio. This workshop is based on the teachings of Candussio who used his knowledge of color to study the elements of an image: surface, light and color and how all three play a part in visual perception. You will learn to create an andamento that is not obvious but well thought out to achieve specific results.
The workshop is also based on a thorough analysis of the theory of color, (a fundamental tool to understand how to recreate colors), light and surface - the placement of irregular tesserae to create movement, interest, shadows, luminosity and texture in both figurative and abstract applications. Through Semeraro’s alliance with the Friuli school we are able to share the teachings of Stefano Jus and his book “The Sun In Mosaic”.
Each mosaicist will be invited use their own imagination and encouraged to experiment. You will also learn the process of fabricating and installing a large scale mosaic to achieve continuity with more than one artist.
Participants will receive reference materials, the "The Sun in Mosaic" book (as soon as it is available in English), have access to the Perdomo Factory Store, and visit the Perdomo Art Studio.
Part 1: Participants work on their own Modern figurative mosaic in the direct method to take home.
Part 2: Participants will collectively work on a large scale 3-dimensional modern abstract mosaic in the indirect method. Upon completion, photographs of the completed piece will be reserved for future book publication listing all participant as contributing artists and hang in the MVM Mosaic Gallery.

Rugs, cushions & Ottomans?? Yes, that's right!
This workshop is designed for the professional mosaic artist who wants to compete in the design and public art arenas or anyone who wants to create special projects for their own home.
Your first two projects will be to learn how to fabricate doormats and pillows from Venetian style glass that are suitable for indoors or outdoors. These are great for retail or your own home/patio.
For both projects you will learn how to design, construct and use a special backing that is flexible and waterproof. You can take these home with you. The process you learn can be used for larger projects, such as ottomans too.
These are very economical projects!
Workshop is 6 days, Monday - Saturday
